This project was funded by Harborough District Council to assist businesses by delivering a combination of support including funding information, 1-2-1 coaching/advice and workshops.
Business Builder offered a unique programme of support for existing and potential high-growth businesses within the Harborough district, based upon projects that we have successfully delivered in Leicestershire over the past four years.
We provided business support in four key areas as described below:
Business Intelligence
Provide information regarding current business support information as issued by the government support agencies in the form of existing employment programmes and financial support. Advice on new business products and training that is available both locally and nationally.
Seminars
Provide business support workshops and seminars delivered around the following key themes:
- • Developing management skills
- • Business planning
- • Managing Human Resources/work life balance
- • Inland Revenue/tax
- • Marketing
- • Intellectual property
- • Retail ‘brand-fit’ assessment
These workshops are delivered at an appropriate level of depth and at convenient locations and times for small to medium enterprises (SMEs). The added value of holding the workshops is that the businesses create a network based on common needs and can learn from each other and pass on some best practice. We are flexible about the content of the workshops and where appropriate will respond to the topic requests from the network members.
1-2-1 Coaching
The focused 1-2-1 coaching advice needed to improve existing and potential high-growth businesses is no longer provided by government agencies. This method of business support delivery is recognised as the most appropriate response to the needs of the owners/managers of SMEs by providing individual advice and support that will help them improve their business. This is a method of delivery popular with SMEs as it is delivered at their premises at a time that is convenient to their working schedule.
Diagnostics
We have the software and training to provide the following diagnostics:
1. Thomas International - Personal Profile. Useful tool for individual self awareness, aid to recruitment, retention of staff, people and organisational development.
2. Biz-EdgeTM - Entrepreneur Scan. Biz-EdgeTM can identify the quality of any individual’s entrepreneurial competencies and provide a flexible framework for a constructive training and development plan. The report indicates the entrepreneurial competencies of the individual listing their strong and weak areas.
3. Belbin - Team Working Characteristics. This tool improves self-knowledge and understanding among individuals and teams. Team roles depict a current behavioural pattern - a snapshot of your behaviour at one time. This helps in team building and understanding the roles within a team environment.
Louisa Sugden from Icon, an information systems company based in Market Harborough took part in the project and said "as a business we are more focused and more driven due to the Business Planning Support we have been given. The diagnostics we have gone through have been so helpful. It has been really beneficial and has made us focus our minds".
