This grant scheme was funded by Leicestershire Economic Partnership during 2007-09 to offer independent retailers in the city centre of Leicester funding to renovate, decorate, improve and even replace shop frontages and security systems.
The primary focus of the project was to develop the area to:
- Improve the street scene
- Improve trade to the city centre businesses
- Engender a feeling of safety in the areas for shoppers and workers alike
The project elements were:
- Additional CCTV cameras and system
- Shop Front Improvement Grant
- City Centre Retail Crime project
- City Centre Retail Performance Initiative (skills)
The project delivered 10 new city centre CCTV cameras and city centre crime report. 50 city centre retailers benefited from the grant scheme and their work has had a very positive impact on the visual appearance of shop frontages in Leicester. These retailers were also able to take advantage of a skills development programme which included business support for marketing, customer service, shop windows, layout, signage, business planning, computerized accounting and sources of further grants.
Café Mbriki was one of the first businesses to benefit from the grant.
